River & Rowing Museum named as one of the top 50 museums (Full Article)

The Times newspaper names Henley's River and Rowing museum in a list of top 50 museums

Henley's River and Rowing Museum has been named one of the world's top 50 museums in a list compiled for The Times by a panel of judges, including celebrity historians Dan Snow and Mary Beard.

Opened 15 years ago, the museum is one of only four independently funded museums in the country on the list and was placed at no 48. The list also featured the British Museum and the Natural History Museum while the top spot went to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.

Last year saw visitor numbers rise to 17,000, representing a 6% increase on 2011 and, appropriately, a new record in a year when the museum’s programme of exhibitions centred on the London Olympics for which it received national and international recognition.

Paul Mainds, chief executive of the museum, said: "It’s amazing for us, after only 15 years, to be ranked alongside such a high calibre of international museums and I am sure that all of Henley will take pride in this".

Later this month, the museum will open an exhibition that brings together objects and artworks from the historic tradition of swan upping on the River Thames.
