Summer activities programme at the River and Rowing Museum (Full Article)

Find your age in Martian years, make a Teddy in a Toga or mini motor boat at the River & Rowing Museum

The River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames will once again be entertaining families with a selection of workshops and events for children and adults alike.

The Museum is hosting its first ever space event on 15 August. Budding astronauts can hear about the planets, moons and stars, as well as working out how old they are in Martian years. There is a range of space themed activities taking place on the day, including the chance to make your very own star constellation.

Children can also learn about one of the UK’s oldest traditions, Swan Upping, which has taken place annually for 900 years. In the Museums very own unique Swan Upping exhibition, which even includes items on display that have been loaned by The Queen, they can hear about the importance of protecting these magnificent animals whilst understanding how it relates to river conservation.

Fascinating new exhibitions for adults for summer 2013 include: a display of works from the atmospheric landscape artist Lynda Minter; the new Glorious Thames display which holds the Olympic Cauldron that was carried through London on the Thames by The Queen’s rowbarge, Gloriana, at the 2012 Games; and the 100 Faces of Henley - One Year On exhibition which charts the stories of members of the local community through portrait photography. There are also a whole host of adult events which include photography courses by the river led by a professional. This includes the chance to become an exhibiting photographer in the museum at the end of the course.

Adults can also come to hear the incredible story of the historic vessel, Puffin, from 50 year old adventurer Graham Walters who successfully rowed this vintage boat across the Atlantic to mark the mysterious loss of it’s crew 30 years ago after being at sea for 106 days.

The awarding-winning River & Rowing Museum, recently ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by The Times announced record visitor numbers last year and looks set for another exciting year of exhibitions, workshops and activities.
